To implement a free and open virtualization system, IRTS turned to téïcée

About the IRTS

The Regional Institute of Social Work (IRTS) Normandy Caen is a body responsible for training future social workers. It provides initial, continuous, alternating training at all levels of education, from level I to level V, and is aimed at a wide audience ranging from " from young baccalaureate graduates to people undergoing vocational retraining. »
Head of IT at theIRTS of Normandy CaenIsabelle Rousseau presents her service, which has recently undergone significant changes. Because, beyond telephony, room equipment and digital equipment, the service now manages a training platform “ tour on the pedagogy of digital practices ” and acquires new skills with the arrival of Baptiste Briant, computer technician.

téïcée: a local and open source provider

For several years téïcée supports the digital infrastructure service of theIRTS Normandie and, when asked about the collaboration between the institute and téïcée, Manuel Bevilacqua, head of the information system, said at the outset that it was not new. ‘EIt actually dates back about ten years when I was looking for a local provider for the institute and focused on open source solutions […] The provider had to help us implement virtualization on our servers,
in other words, to move from a system based on physical servers to a system based on virtual servers
» .

“Why go to the owner when Open Source is so good?”

Open Source has presided over the choice of the provider and when asked about the motivations that push him to choose the free, the explanation resonates as an obvious “ Like everyone else, we are trying to get rid of proprietary licenses and their complex management. Why go to the owner when Open Source can do things so well and cheaply? ” But for Manuel Bevilacqua it is a choice certainly economic “ but not low-cost though… it
We still need to find a certain comfort and optimal use.
»
Because expectations remain high regarding the quality of the product and, in this regard, the solution implemented by téïcée gives complete satisfaction.

Baptiste Briant, technician in the IT department, appreciates as much “ the ergonomics, the data collected by the VMs, the visualization of all the features that go next to it, as well as the built-in backup part. »

A flexible and easy to use solution

Because indeed Proxmox VE is globally recognized for its user-friendly web interface that allows easy management of virtual machines, containers and storage. It is also valued for features such as storage replication and hot migration of virtual machines.
But its main asset remains its flexibility allowing it to support both local storage and network storage, then to be easily extended thanks to complementary modules, and finally and above all to meet specific needs, to realize “tailor-made”.
Manuel Bevilacqua, for his part, appreciates “ to be able to deploy VMs on the fly and adds to the open-source nature of the solution Proxmox VE « the fact that it is stable while avoiding having proprietary licenses at indecent costs… It is true that the solution suits our expectations ».

“Proxmox seems very stable to us”

téïcée has also played an important role in the evolution of the device and has been at the rendezvous to propose, as of 2019, an alternative to a virtualization solution “ who was running out of breath ». Manuel Bevilacqua adds in that regard, ‘ [that] we needed to evolve our hardware and software infrastructure. »
The solution Proxmox VE recommended at the time by téïcée today gives full satisfaction as explained by Manuel Bevilacqua “ we do not regret since there were so many small failures, bugs with Redhat, as much Proxmox we think we are very stable (…) we have never had any problems with VM management ».

To be continued!

Isabelle Rousseau rightly points out that in addition to virtualization, collaboration with téïcée concerns many other outsourcing, assistance and monitoring activities “ téïcée accompanied us in the implementation of our captive portal […] of the backup solution and there are also other projects that we would like to talk with téïcée like VoIP… »
Collaboration between theIRTS and téïcée thus seems to be promised a bright future. It will be part of the evolution of the service itself because, according to Isabelle Rousseau, collaboration will have to be an integral part of the response to the objectives of controlling expenses and acquiring greater autonomy. " These are the aspects that will drive our activity with téïcée. »
